A Business Security Checklist: Getting More from the CCTV You Already Own

A step-by-step business security checklist for upgrading existing CCTV with AI: camera audit, detection rules, alert routing, evidence handling, health monitoring and review.

You do not need a new security system to get modern protection. Most businesses can turn the cameras already on their walls into an intelligent monitoring system in an afternoon. Use this checklist to do it properly.

1. Audit your cameras

  • List every camera, its location and what it is supposed to protect.
  • Confirm each provides an RTSP/IP stream (directly or through your DVR/NVR).
  • Check lens cleanliness, night-time visibility and whether the view is still correct.
  • Identify blind spots at entrances, storerooms, docks and rear exits.

2. Decide what you need to detect

For each camera, choose the detections that matter: people and vehicles, intrusion with zones and schedules, theft or suspicious activity, loitering, fire and smoke, faces of enrolled staff, number plates. Avoid enabling everything everywhere — targeted rules produce useful alerts.

3. Set zones and hours

Draw restricted areas and define opening hours per site. Severity should follow context: a person at the entrance during the day is low; the same person in the stockroom after closing is high.

4. Route alerts by role

  • Daytime operational alerts to floor or site managers (push).
  • After-hours intrusion and fire alerts to owners and guards (push plus SMS/WhatsApp or Telegram).
  • Camera-offline alerts to whoever can fix them.
  • Define who acknowledges and closes events.

5. Handle evidence responsibly

Evidence should be encrypted, retained for a defined period and accessible only to authorised roles. Make sure incident reports can be exported for police, insurers and management.

6. Monitor the monitors

Camera and system health alerts — offline cameras, dropped frames, low FPS, storage — are the difference between a system that works and one that silently stopped last month.

7. Review weekly

Read the weekly report: which cameras generate the most events, how quickly alerts are acknowledged, where false positives cluster. Adjust zones and thresholds accordingly.

8. Plan for growth

If you run more than one site, choose a platform that gives you one dashboard across locations with role-based access, API or webhooks for your other tools and audit logs for governance. Zintrov AI plans scale from four cameras at a single shop to hundreds of cameras across many locations — if you would like help mapping your cameras to a plan, book a demo and we will walk through it with you.
