How to Prevent Theft in Retail and Jewellery Shops with AI CCTV

A practical guide to using AI CCTV for theft prevention in retail and jewellery stores: camera placement, zone rules, after-hours alerts, evidence and staff workflows.

Retail theft rarely looks dramatic. It is a hand that lingers near a showcase, a person who waits near the door until staff are busy, a back door opened after closing. AI CCTV is effective against theft precisely because it notices these small patterns in real time and gives staff a chance to respond while the person is still in the store.

1. Place cameras for detection, not just recording

Recording cameras are often mounted high and wide. For AI detection, make sure at least one camera has a clear view of each high-value display, the counter and the entrance at a height where people are clearly visible. Keep the storeroom door and any rear exit covered.

2. Draw zones and set opening hours

Define restricted zones — behind the counter, inside the storeroom, around the safe — and set your opening hours per store. During the day, suspicious activity near displays is flagged with evidence. After closing, any person detected anywhere becomes a high-severity intrusion event.

3. Use loitering alerts at entrances and showcases

Loitering detection flags people who linger near entrances or high-value showcases beyond a threshold you set. For jewellers this is often the earliest signal that something is being planned.

4. Let evidence do the arguing

Every event should carry a time-stamped screenshot or clip. When a manager receives an alert on their phone with the frame attached, they can decide in seconds whether to walk over, call a colleague or simply keep watching. After an incident, encrypted evidence and an incident report make police and insurance conversations far simpler.

5. Recognise who belongs

Consent-first face recognition lets you enrol staff so their presence after hours is logged rather than alarmed, and enrol VIP customers so they are greeted personally. Unknown people are never profiled — the system only recognises those you have enrolled.

6. Watch the cameras themselves

A covered or unplugged camera is a classic precursor to theft. Camera-offline and degraded-stream alerts tell you the moment a camera stops reporting.

7. Build a simple response workflow

  • Who receives daytime theft alerts? Usually the floor manager, on push notification.
  • Who receives after-hours intrusion alerts? The owner and the guard, on push and SMS or Telegram.
  • Who acknowledges and closes events, and how quickly? Track this in the dashboard's audit log.
  • Review the weekly report: which cameras and hours generate the most events?

Theft and basic intrusion detection are included in the Zintrov AI Starter plan for up to four cameras; loitering, face recognition and SMS/WhatsApp alerts arrive with Professional. For jewellers, Premium adds weapon and crowd detection.
